Abstract
This paper summarizes results of a 3-month (one academic quarter) group phenomenological investigation into student motivation to learn. The investigation was supported by a small grant from the Educational Development Program at Montana State University, and took place in a class of three faculty and twelve students created for this purpose. Research methodology involved a process of guided phenomenological inquiry led by myself, with the goal of trying to describe a truly "universal" motivating educational experience at the level of pure form--where it is devoid of the content of any particular course. The project resulted in a better understanding of student motivation in the classroom, as well as a diagnostic instrument that can be used to assess the motivational climate of any class.
