Abstract

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument (VCNM) is located on the Colorado Plateau in northern Coconino County, Arizona. VCNM encompasses 276,566 acres of Pinyon- juniper woodland, warm and cold desert grassland, desert scrub, sand dune, spring, and riparian vegetation communities. A total of 710 plant taxa representing 73 families and 296 genera are vouchered from within the monument boundary including one new state report. VCNM is home to one threatened species, Asclepias welshii. Seven species endemic to Arizona occur here, as well as at least three additional Colorado Plateau endemics. Non-native taxa make up 7% of the flora of VCNM. Several non-native taxa, including Centaurea diffusa, Cuscuta occidentalis, Medicago polymorpha, Portulaca oleracea, and Tribulus terrestris, are classified as noxious weeds and may pose a threat to both VCNM and its close neighbors Grand Canyon National Monument and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
