OpenKnowledge@NAU. http://openknowledge.nau.edu/id/eprint/XXXXX -------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW -------------------- File list and brief description of all data files: "Field_Measurements.csv": Tree inventory of all sites, measured in the 2017 and 2018 field seasons. "Mechanical_Testing.csv": Measurements pre- and post-testing for the 795 small clear samples. "Site_Data.csv": Site-level data. Relationship between files: The "Mechanical_Testing.csv" data includes the response variables for all analyses in the paper. Tree- and site-level measurements are contained in "Field_Measurements.csv" and "Site_Data.csv" If data was derived from another source, list source: N/A -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- Data collection and processing: Vaughan et al. 2020. Modelling variation in wood stiffness of Pinus ponderosa using static bending and acoustic measurements. Forestry. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: In brief, we destructively sampled 103 trees to produce small clear lumber samples for static bending tests. Samples were collected across the northern Arizona region to represent a range in site conditions. Methods for processing the data: We tested the samples on a Tinius Olson 5000 Universal Testing Machine. Data processing and analysis was conducted in the R statistical computing environment. Quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: We ensured that all values were reasonable, and if not data were discarded. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Manuscript authors were Damon Vaughan, David Auty, Joseph Dahlen, Andrew Sanchez Meador, and Kurt Mackes. James Forst, Scarlet Jackson, Abbey Johnson, and Richard Saucedo Campos assisted with sample collection. -------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION ("Field_Measurements.csv") -------------------------- Number of variables: 8 Number of cases/rows: 985 Variable list, defining any abbreviations, units of measure, codes or symbols used: Site: Two-letter site code. 19 total Plot: There were three plots per site; this field indicates which number. This is not a unique ID, must be combined with Site to form a unique ID. Tree: Trees were numbered sequentially during inventory. Must be combined with Site and Plot to form unique Tree ID. Species: Only ponderosa pine "PIPO" were analyzed in the study, but we collected data on other species during inventory DBH: Diameter at breast height, in inches CBH: Canopy base height, in feet. Canopy base height was the bole height to the lowest branch within 1 meter of the continuous live crown. HT: Total tree height, in feet. TreeVel: Standing-tree acoustic velocity, measured with ST300. km/s. Missing data codes: Blank, NA, or na -------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION ("Mechanical_Testing.csv") -------------------------- Number of variables: 12 Number of cases/rows: 795 Variable list, defining any abbreviations, units of measure, codes or symbols used: SampleID: Unique ID for each sample, including site, plot, tree, vertical position, and horizontal position. Example: A1-1-1-1-1 came from Site "A1", from the first plot, from the first tree measured, from the first vertical position (breast height), from the first horizontal position (adjacent to pith). HT: Vertical height in tree from which sample was taken, in feet. Drop: Don't include in analysis because of failure method during testing. "Y" means drop from analysis, "N" means include in analysis. Quality: Visual sample quality ranking based on number of knots and sample form. 1 is best, 5 is worst. Samples ranked 5 were not included in analysis. Velocity: Acoustic velocity of small clear sample, measured with Fakopp device, in km/s. MOR: Modulus of Rupture, measured on static bending machine (MPa) MOE: Modulus of Elasticity, measured on static bending machine (GPa) MC: Moisture content of sample (percent) Dens: Density of sample (g per cubic centimeter) Ring: Mean ring number from pith for the sample MOEd: Dynamic MOE, calculated from acoustic velocity and density Missing data codes: no missing data -------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION ("Site_Data.csv") -------------------------- Number of variables: 7 Number of cases/rows: 19 Variable list, defining any abbreviations, units of measure, codes or symbols used: Site: Site code. OMB was not used in the study because it was a training site for the crews. Full.Name: Full name of the site Forest: The name of the national, state, or municipal forest Ownership: National Forest, State/Centennial, or Flagstaff. Latitude: Decimal degrees Longitude: Decimal degrees Elev: Elevation, in feet Missing data codes: no missing data
