Abstract

This paper presents a study testing a model of the relationship between internal locus of control and student conscientiousness on student productivity, student satisfaction, and performance for students who learn in a virtual, technology-mediated environment. The model hypothesized that technology usage (use of video and web-based delivery) would moderate the following relationships: between students' conscientiousness and performance, between internal locus of control and satisfaction, and would moderate the relationship between student satisfaction and performance. Results from this sample indicate that virtual students have higher internal locus of control than their traditional learning counterparts, but have significantly lower levels of satisfaction. No significant moderation could be supported for the effects of learning technology usage on the relationship between student conscientiousness and performance. Additionally, the moderation was not supported for the effects of technology on the relationship between internal locus of control with student satisfaction. Interestingly, the use of technology to support a student's learning environment was found to moderate the relationship between student satisfaction and student performance, indicating that the use of technology to facilitate learning is important because it helps to clarify the student satisfaction and performance relationship.
