This study explored the extent to which economic variables relate to aggregate enrollment as well as enrollment by demographic subgroup in ten community college districts in the state of Arizona. The economic variables included in the study were in-county tuition and fees, state appropriations to the district, local appropriations to the district, maximum annual Pell Grant award amount, county unemployment rate, and county median household income. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to explore the relationships between the independent variables and enrollment. The findings of the study indicated that community college enrollment in Arizona was related to county unemployment rate and to state appropriations to the district. The findings also showed that the economic variables with strongest correlations to enrollment were not necessarily the variables included in the best enrollment model. Additionally it was found that the relationships between aggregate enrollment and the economic variables in community college districts with similar characteristics were not the same. It was also concluded that studying the relationships between enrollment by demographic subgroups and each independent variable provided insight into some of the relationships found between aggregate enrollment and each independent variable in the three community college districts analyzed by demographic subgroup.
