Abstract

This study used a correlational design to determine if there were differences between the leadership styles of elementary principals. The three leadership styles that were referenced were transactional, transformational, and transcendental. The teachers of eight elementary schools in southern Arizona were surveyed to determine the leadership style of their building principals. In addition, four of the eight schools functioned as Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) schools while the other four schools were considered non-PBIS schools. From the results of the surveys, a comparative analysis was done to determine what the differences were in the three leadership styles in PBIS and in the non-PBIS. The leadership styles were then analyzed to determine if there was a correlation between the leadership styles.The measurement tools that were used to determine the leadership styles were the MLQ 5X-Short to collect data on transactional and transformational leadership traits and a modified version of the Existential Well Being Scale to collect data on transcendental leadership traits. Descriptive demographic questions were included in the instrumentation to collect data on the individual characteristics of the participants in the study.The overall outcomes of this study revealed that there was not a significant difference between the PBIS and non-PBIS school principal leadership styles in transactional leadership however data did reveal that the leadership styles of elementary principals from PBIS schools had a greater tendency to exhibit transformational and transcendental leadership characteristics than those functioning in non-PBIS school environments.In relation to whether or not there was a correlation between the three leadership styles, data revealed that there was a significant negative correlation between transformational and transactional leadership styles and there was a significant positive correlation between transcendental and transformational leadership styles.In addition, there were positive correlations between the length of time that a teacher had worked at the same school and with the same principal. Also, those principals who worked with the same teachers for a longer period of time exhibited more transcendental leadership characteristics.
